LT1050 Coil / LCD Display Issue

Hello,

I attempted to search for this topic but was unable to find anything.

I have an older LT1050 with 490 hours (model number 13RQ11CP056), it has the Kohler Courage 25 engine. Last week it started to run rough when hot and under load. I diagnosed it as the coil on the right side.

I bought a set of after market coils. That fixed the power issue, but now I have a LCD Display issue.

When the key is turned on, I get the battery voltage for a few seconds then the hours show up like usual. After starting the engine, the LCD display starts to flicker with different characters and the Batt light on the display will have a random flicker as well.

I tried another new set of coils (different brand) with the same issue.

Has anyone experienced this? If so, is there a solution.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Was the second set aftermarket? You might try OEM. Sometimes, cheaper is not better with coils.

Aftermarket Coils

The second set was aftermarket as well as the first. I just ordered a set of OEM coils. I will let you know once they arrive and i get them installed.

Thanks for your reply.

On an engine with magneto ignition, I have a hard time grasping how magneto ignition coils would affect anything in the electrical circuitry. All they do is detect magnetic pulses generated by a magnet in the flywheel, amplify it, and send it to the spark plugs. No connections to the rest of the system except a for a kill wire from the key switch.

I'd be more prone to take a good look at your battery or charging system. My:TwoCents:

After Market Coil Update

I replaced the second of aftermarket coils with OEM coils.

No more glitchy, flickering LCD display or flickering red Batt Light while running.

But now when the engine is running the LCD display shows 0.0 for the Voltage, the Batt LCD icon is on and a solid red Batt light.

My Battery seems good, reads 12.8 at rest and 13.67 while the engine is running.

A quick measurement of the resistance on the aftermarket vs OEM coil replacements:

Original (one would fail after hot or load)
9.23 ohms
8.90 ohms

1st set aftermarket
3.78 ohms
3.80 ohms

2nd set aftermarket
3.98 ohms
4.00 ohms

Replacement OEM
9.58 ohms
13.60 ohms

I tried disconnecting the Negative terminal for an hour or so to attempt to Reset the LCD system.

Is there another way to reset the system?

Thanks for your help.

John
