1863 Hydro Dip Stick Level

Are you guys actually able to get the dip stick to read at the full line? I recently tore down and replaced the shaft and rear cover seal(s.) I know the manual calls for approximately 7 quarts. I crept up the the 7 quarts mark checking every quarter from 6 until I hit 7 and it barley shows anything at the bottom of the dip stick. Do I need to add more since probably drained more than a typically plug drain and fill?

Here is a picture of the dip stick after pulling it out, whipping it off, reinserting, and removing to check. Can someone check their dipstick to see if they are registering full? When test driving under higher speeds or coasting down hill I get a pretty loud whine from the hydro. I don't have a frame of reference since I haven't ridden this thing since I was a kid over 20 years ago

What filter did you use when you replaced it?

I looked at the parts look up from above and found that a dipstick from an 1811 and an 1863 use the same part #903-0911P. Here is a PDF on dipstick info that Uncle Lew posted a while back IIRC.

Dip Stick measures 11.5" and the dip stick tube measures 8" from the top of the rear housing to top of tube which tells me I likely have the right 8.75" tube.

1863 Hydro Dip Stick Level

I recently topped off the Hydro on my Dad's 1641. It didn't take much to bring it from pretty much at the bottom of the stick up to full. Could have something to do with the shape of the transmission housing near the top of the unit. It's curved, so adding a little fluid might seem like a lot on the dip stick. :bigthink:
