I have a clunk!

So while repairing the Trunion spring which you folks helped me with, I dropped a few parts under the tractor and had to roll the tractor a few inches back and forth to retrieve the parts.

That’s when I noticed a rather significant “clunk” in the rear end. I could both feel it and hear it easily. I did not notice it when the tractor was running. The clunk seems to happen when first rolling the tractor forward or reverse a few inches. I jacked up the rear end and the clunk seems the same with no weight on the tires. I could not notice any wheel bearing movement when I tried to check each wheel individually. And the differential allowed the wheels to move as I believe they should when spun in different directions.

I realize that the next step is likely removing the rear plate and having a look. It I’m wondering if there are other tests I could do to give me direction in what to look for when I do the inspection?

I will attempt to upload a short vid that shows the problem. I appreciate any assistance or direction you can give me.

Sorry to say, but a "clunk" is a very vague complaint.

We'll have to wait for the movie for a better understanding.

But most likely I would think it's excessive back lash between the ring and pinion gear. Which for what these machines do isn't harmful.

Glad you got the trunion fixed :IH Trusted Hand:

Maybe a video link?

I may be technology challenged cuz I can’t seem to get this link properly in this post but there is a short YouTube of the clunk I’m talking about.

I agree, clunk is way to vague to get and response. Just having trouble getting vid up.

Link should be:

Not sure what I am doing wrong with link.

Google "how to change private video to public in YouTube" That might help

Thanks Dale,
Yes I think I need to take the cover off soon. I had to adjust the trunion the other day and had the tractor running for a short time. With the motor running I cannot notice the clunk, or feel it. I don’t want to be too aggressive in changing directions until I have a better sense of what the clunk might be. I cannot get to opening up the diff until October sometime. Time to order a new gasket etc.

Thanks for your thoughts.
