782 vanguard swap
 
Hello all. I recently aquired a 782 with a bad motor for free and a good used vanguard for cheap. I’m gonna be swapping the vanguard into the 782 but I’m just wondering what all exactly I’ll need? I’m having a wiring harness made up currently, and I got the pto that came from the vanguard originally. What else would I need? Thanks.

1: Drive shaft. I would use one from a 1641 or 1440
2: Motor plate and spacers. Again one from a 1641 or 1440
3: Muffler. Again one from a 1641 or 1440
4: Pump adapter to adapt the early style pump to the later drive shaft. Parts by Jeff
5: Cooling duct work. I used some roll plastic that I got from a race car supply.

Pics are from a 1210 that I did years ago, pretty much same as what you want to do. :beerchug:

the motor i got was believed to be obtained from a 1440 or a 1641, so i have the mufler and the heat sheilding then. what do you mean by cooling duct work? just gotta cut some of the bracket that holds the fuel tank? thanks

The fan shroud on the engine needs to be sealed as best it can over to the firewall on the machine. This keeps the engine from cooking itself. You want the engine to pull air from under the tunnel cover where it will be cooler and cleaner if your machine still has the belly screen on it. The middle pic that Sam posted shows that. Good luck on your transplant and post some pics when you can.

ahhh ok i see it now, thank you. the mower didnt come with side panels so it would probably be fine until i put panels on. i just have to find some. currently in the process of getting all the parts for the swap, will keep updating

what did you do for a throttle cable? is there someone or someplace that sells throttle cable "stock" to make my own cable? mine is going to be too short. choke cable will end up being alright.

I know Lawn mower shops have "universal" Stens or Arnold brand "make your own" cables
I've also seen them at TSC,Farm home and larger HWD stores.
I'm sure the net' /evil pray will also have them
I have seen them at tractor show flea markets.
They usually come with a control bracket/handle which I dispose of and just use the jacket/sheath and wire cutting it to length.
A needle nose pliers works nice to put the proper kinks on the ends or the wire.
( they make a nice "tool" that makes the "Z" end on the wire for that factory correct look on the end) but a needle nose works just as good for me.

i just got around to putting everything together because i got the parts finally, and the space between the flywheel and the driveshaft is 1 inch short, so its not engaging at all. this is with all the parts you suggested. is there a driveshaft spacer a guy can aquire? or if i must i can drill new bolt holes on the motor plate so the motor is closer to the driveshaft?
