782D front PTO clutch question/problem

My 782D has started acting up in that it will engage the front PTO (mower) and mow fine for a while...till things heat up. Then it will not continue to keep the PTO engaged.

I have cleaned the contacts of that relay as I know it runs hot but no joy.

Does this sound like a relay problem? If so, I hope a suitable one is available for a replacement.

The clutch itself works fine ... no slipping, etc. The mower deck spindles turn easily and are well greased.

Thanks for any diagnostic suggestions from the gurus of OCC!

Check the PTO electrical connections and make sure it is good.

Have you checked the air gap on the clutch?

zilla24 06-16-2025 06:44 AM

I second the air gap, just went through that with one of mine.

That look like the right process?

Thanks!

No cigar

OK, I adjusted the clutch (it was > 0.020" ) but that didn't fix it.

Any idea where a suitable relay could be purchased? I've looked but my search Fu must be weak today

Check with the sponsors. They are bound to have that.

It could be coil. Have you checked thr resistance? My 1772 was doing that. Cold it worked, heated up, would not work. It was the coil.

Thanks for the suggestion. Sent a note to CCC about it.

Tried to look it up in the service manual in the reference files section, but the link there is broken.

Don't know how to check the coil other than if it's open. Is there a DC resistance spec?

Oak 06-29-2025 10:12 AM

The link works for me.

The resistance should be 3-3.4 ohms @ 70*.

Can you run a jumper for testing purposes when it acts up?

The relay is part# 925-0894. It's in the parts look up under "Electrical Switches and Wiring Harness"

Your 782D is a red 882 so type in 882 under the parts look-up.

Will give a check tomorrow. I just got finished putting new roll roofing on the lean-to that keeps the 782D dry. Did I mention it's hot and humid ?
