LT1045 cranks but cuts off
 

My LT1045 was sitting over the winter and I put some new gas in (it did have a little old gas left - ethanol free). Put a new battery in since the old wouldnt hold a charge. It cranks right up, sounds great, but dies within a second or two. I removed the fuel line where it connects to carb and cranked, and plenty of fuel is coming out. So its not a matter of not enough fuel. To me its almost like its not getting spark as soon as i left off the ignition. Because (I know I'm not supposed to do this), but i held the ignition even after it fired for 3-4 seconds, and it will keep running until i let off the ignition switch, then died immediately when i let go. Any ideas of what the problem would be?

I really excited to read massinations post because i am workng on one that is doing the exact same thing.....died on the operator while mowing...he replaced coil, new plug, battery...it was a 100% textbook "Crank no start" I put a new carb on it...fired right up ran like a top... Returned it to the owner...he used it for about 1 hour and it died on him and is doing the exact thing massination described...starts..sounds great for4 to 6 seconds...then just dies...no sputtering...no trying to stay alive its gone....If you try to restart it immediately ....forget it...crank no start...wait 20 minutes or so...it will start then die.

I quoted Ironman becuase i thought it was the solenoid too...so i snipped it off clean...made no difference at all..Was wondering what his next thing to try would be if its defintely not that solenoid. .Im thinking it has to be either a bad carb or a faulty ignition switch...:bigthink: Im fixing to go see if it is either of those....any other ideas/suggestions would be most welcome. Thanks in advance.

I suggest that you look for a restriction in the fuel supply to the carb. Every thing from the tank to the carb. See if you have some junk in the tank that blocks the outlet then it floats away till you run it and it blocks the flow again.

Swapped out the carb and it runs like new..We will see..
