over charging 127

Lifted the hood to add fuel recently to see the voltage regulator resting on the engine. Rubber mounts finally gave up the ghost.

Picked up a VR off the interweb and installed it. Polarized the generator like my olde dad taught me. It seemed OK. Today the ammeter shows fully to the charging position with 17v at battery. Wiring checks out. (F to F on gen, Gen to A on gen, Bat to Ammeter)

What did I do wrong? Thx

Ordered a V/R off the interweb, is what you did wrong :D

I've had a few that I've put on in the past that would over charge.
The best way I found to remedy that was to remove the cover and adjust it.
I know easier said then done.

Here is a series on making adjustments on a regulator

This guy's got some impressive knowledge.

Thx for the link Mr Green

Very informative videos.

Sadly, I tossed the VR with the failed rubber mounts. I could have riveted new rubbers

This is how we learn.

Least now you'll have the knowledge for next time.

Same experience here.... old VR broke at rubbers, bought 2 new China junk with unsatisfactory results and went back to old VR with new rubbers installed. As with the junky VRs, one had the ammeter pegged solid charge and the other had the ammeter jumping back/forth wildly. The old VR does a perfect job.

I'd rather find NOS regulators or buy salvaged old USA made regulators and hope the best.
