782D water pump replacement?
 

I wonder if anyone here has replaced the water pump in a 782D? I think mine is toast, and wonder if it's possible to do the job without pulling the engine (ugh).

Thanks for any advice! Off to go see if it's as frozen up as I think it is.

EDIT: It's frozen up.

I have never done that job but I think it you removed the battery tray you could change it without removing the engine. If you do not have a CV drive shaft, I would change the belt too.

Thanks for the info. I've been able to get a wrench on (and loosen) all 5 bolts, so I know it's possible with the generator removed.

Getting the old hoses off might be the hardest part. I've been able to source the lower hose, but so far, not the upper (return) hose.

Man that thing (pump) is frozen solid, but then again it's 38 yrs old, so....

Oddly enough, a replacement part is available on Amazon (import).

Update... CCSpecialties had the hose. It too is on order now.

The upper hose is also available from Kubota. Part#K7311-85150. This is for a UTV and the end will need cut off but it fits and looks great.

That water pump belt is a Gates 7320 and probably a good time to change it. That engine assembly is pretty easy to pull on those diesels and would probably make changing the pump a lot easier.

Oh, I'm REALLY hoping not to have to pull the motor! :-)

I'm pretty sure I can get to it as is. I'm just waiting for the pump and hose to show up.

Got the pump out and the hoses off. I just received the replacement hoses (thank you CC Specialties, who was super fast shipping). New pump seems to match the old one which is good, and I just got the sealant for the gasket.

Interesting that the manual says to apply the sealant but the pump that came off only had sealant around the bolt holes . Since that appeared to work for ~40 yrs, I'll probably do the same thing.

Getting the bolts out for the pump wasn't as tough as getting the old hoses off, as predicted. I did have to take the pulley off in the tractor before I could get all the bolts holding the pump on backed out enough.

Looks good John. Where did you get your pump? I have a friend looking for one and he ordered one from Scamazon but it wasn't even close to being correct.

There's a lot of sellers of this pump, but few included the gasket for some reason (or at least mentioned it)

One update on that pump. While everything fit back together (I'm waiting for the gasket sealer to cure) the neck of the pump up near the flange for the pulley mount is slightly fatter than stock.


This allowed the stock bolts that hold the pulley to the flange to hit the neck of the pump. I removed them all and put a lock washer under the head of the stock bolts, retightened and all was good.


Hopefully I can still bend up the thin metal sheet that is formed up against the head of the bolt to keep it from backing out as well.
