Starter Rebuid, Cub-Cadet 1450
 
I recently aquired a 1976 Cub-Cadet 1450.
The tractor has a 14hp Kohler K321 engine. The starter/alternator is in need of a rebuild or replacement. I'm wondering what others opinions are on this subject, should I rebuild the starter, or replace it?
I can find starter rebulid kits on eBay and others for about $30, and new/rebuit starters for about $50-$60+.
What do you guys think?:bigthink:

I would fix the old one. I have had bad luck with the chinese starters. The 2 I have used on my diesels lasted a little over a year.

What about a original one that has been rebuilt?
I know if a guy in Ohio that rebuilds old ones with new parts.

Thinking your 1450 has a permanent magnet starter and a separate Alternator for charging the battery.
Now a previous owner could have made some changes and installed an older engine setup with a belt driven starter/Generator. like that of a 149 which is also a 14 hp engine.

Which do you have?
What are your problems?
Best to give too much info, than not enough so we can help you.
Before you spend any $$, best to diagnose what your problem is, and if you feel it is a starter problem, then open it up and check things.
The brushes wear and the rare earth magnets sometimes break, if the magnets are broken, its time for a new starter.
If just brushes or bushing/bearings are worn, then it might be cost effective
to repair it. :bigthink:

Here is a picture of what mine looks like, this one is not mine, but a picture of one like mine I fournd on the internet. It says on the side, (as you can see in the picture) that it is also the alternator.
This 1450 has Kohler K321 14hp.

That is a starter motor PERIOD.
For use with an alternator electrical system as the label states.
It is NOT an alternator.
You didn't answer the "What is you problem?" question.

The main problem is there is no charging voltage when the engine is running.

If that is not the alternator, I checked the manual and you are right, what is the problem with the battery not charging?

I'm new to working on engines, so I'm going to sound like a greenhorn here.

Not charging is a rectifier issue.
Loos and/or dirty connections comes to mind.
Check the three wires that come from it into the harness.

Aw, now comes the vital information, its not charging!
One does not go to the dentist for a foot problem, ( well ok, some people put their foot in their mouth regular) Ha,LOL!

You will need to check your charging system as mentioned for the easy stuff first, then check that your alternator is putting out power using your volt meter, following the wiring diagram.
Thinking there is a procedure on this site for doing that, hopefully someone will chime in to guide you to it.
