Bad compression release

I just bought a used Cadet LT1046 that started when I put it on the trailer to bring home. Got it home and wouldn't start, acted like a low battery but it had a new battery. Didn't unload and took it straight to the Cadet dealer. Just got a report from him that the compression release is defective and has to be replaced along with the cam for some reason. It's a Kohler 23 hp Courage motor. He says the repair would run more than the tractor is worth and is common for this engine. What do you guys think and is there a reasonable repair ? Please be specific. I'm on a fixed income and this is bad news for me. I'd welcome any suggestions and advice. I of course can't even sell it at this point. Please help. Thanks to all.

The automatic compression release (ACR) on a Courage consists of a spring and a weight on the exhaust cam gear. If the dealer is correct that it is defective, it is likely that the spring is broken or dislodged. Parts wise not too expensive, but repair would be fairly involved for someone unfamiliar with doing such things, thus your cost is mostly labor.

Sorry to say but the Courage engine was not one of Kohler's best efforts.
