IH 582 clutch adjustment problem

I bought an IH 582 last year (S/N 670XXX) that was often difficult to shift without grinding gears. This spring I decided I should check the clutch adjustment.

It was way off, the free play is supposed to be 9/16 inch at the pedal and 0.050 inch between the clutch release lever and the clutch release bearing. On mine it was more like 1 inch at the pedal.

When I looked underneath, however, the adjustment nut was already tightened as far as it could go. It was either bottoming out on the threads or the tension spring was fully compressed.

I ended up taking the nut off, removing the tension spring (for now) and adding a 1/2 inch stack of washers so that I could set the free play to the right amount.

Clearly something is not right with the mechanism, but nothing looks bent to me, so I'm not sure what the issue is. It does seem to shift better now.

Any ideas what to look for? I could cut some coils off the tension spring and carry on with my stack of washers, but I would like to understand what is going on.

Teaser spring broken or missing

Look also for a worn pivot pin and/or worn holes on the release arm. Here's what the pin looked like on my 1806.

Thanks. I assume the main spring is the one around drive shaft, to the rear of the release bearing? That is definitely present, though I couldn't say if it is broken or not.

Which is the teaser spring? It is mentioned in the service manual that I have on p. 2-27, "4. Inspect the teaser spring ends. Ends should be rounded to prevent gouging the clutch shaft." but it is not called out on the diagram and I'm not sure what it is.

Thank you! I have been lurking since buying two(!?) older CC tractors last year. There is a wealth of knowledge here. I have this 582 and a MTD 1810.

Thanks. Can I get to that pin from above if I take the panel off that the gear shift lever comes through?
