NOS M18 for 782 or 982
Hello, I was fortunate to come across an NOS M-18 Kohler engine. I have a 982 with no engine and a 782 with an M-18 with a crankshaft that needs replacement. Should I just swap engines in the 782 or will the engine do the job on the 982 with less horsepower? Thanks for advice.

What are your plans for the two tractors?
I use mine just to piddle with, and rarely actually need all of the horsepower. |
I just want to mow grass and I didn’t know if the 18 h.p vs 19.9 that was on it would matter much.

M18
My brother has a 1872 SGT he bought new with a M18 and he is running a 60 inch Haban deck and he said it does a fine job, plenty of power. I have a SGT, don't know what it originally was cause it was a basket case when I got it but is a Red 982 now and I put a M18 in it and run a 44 inch deck, can't go any bigger cause won't fit through my shed door, and it has plenty of power.

I'd put the Mag in the 982. What's the spec number on the NOS one? There should be plenty of tin work available out there to make the install complete. What's wrong with the crankshaft on your 782 machine?

I don't think there will be any noticeable power difference between the two.
You might have to make a minor wiring change if your previous engine was a coil ignition system.:beerchug: |
The M18 will do everything you will need to do with power to spare. The only downsides to them are some parts availability, and their thirst for fuel. They are a proven powerplant, and arguably better than the Onan and definitely better than the KT17's.

Hey 1711......"arguably better than the Onan"
I'll argue that point because the Onan B48G is an awesome engine.:biggrin2: Attachment 112530 But then again I might just be ...... Attachment 112531 |
I don't own one, but I blew one up several years ago. It was in a Steiner and had less than 100 hours on it at the time and belonged to my employer.
The big thing now is parts availability and cost of parts when you do find them. |
