Differences in the 582

I’ve never heard of a “Special” version. What makes it different?

R Bedell 02-24-2023 07:26 AM

There were two 582 tractors. They were the 582 and the 582-S (special). IH wanted to offer that model (582-S) for a less money for people wanting to enter the Garden Tractor market.

The 582 & 582-S are identical EXCEPT for their transmissions. The 582 had the standard IH 3 speed transmission. The 582-S had the 4 speed Peerless Transaxle. Since the Peerless Transmission was a "lighter duty" and less money to buy than build the IH standard, wha-la it was put into the 582.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. I never knew that!

The S also had shaft drive to right angle Gear Box and Belt to Transmission just Like the 482:ThumbsUp:

Were the Peerless transmissions really that bad?

So....THAT'S what that dam gearbox (paperweight) that has been lying on my shelf for 10 years is for, huh?:bigthink:

Didn't the special have a Briggs?

R Bedell 02-25-2023 06:30 PM

Both models had the 16HP B&S engine.

I don't think there were terrible at Plowing earth Got a friend and that's a Major Part of His collection 1100, 482, 582S, 1204, 1604 His Primary Plowing tractor is a 482.

The 482 was a tractor he bought new in 1981

His cultivating & snow thrower Tractor is a 1212 or an 1812 and Like's to Plow snow with a 1604

I really think it just drives some Cub owners Nuts because there not fully shaft drive and they Had B&S engines :biggrin2:
