682 mower PTO switch
 

The toggle switch for my pto won't stay engaged unless I hold it in the on position, I thought it was a bad switch so I replaced it with a new one and still in order to keep the electric clutch engaged I have to hold it in the on position. Does anyone have an idea what would cause this? It did work earlier this spring.
Thanks, Tom It's a red one serial # 729423. I figure things have been rewired and bypassed over the years, since I've owned it it has never shut off the mower when backing up.

The Reverse Relay and/or wiring connected to it, could be, or is bad.

So the production sequence number is really quite necessary to properly answer this question, as the wiring changed during the 682's production run.

I would be looking at the seat switch for this problem.

A Chassis Serial Number is needed to pinpoint and accurately help you with your problem.

On the 782 (much like the 682's) the early ones physically stayed in the on position after PTO was selected.
Later ones physically returned to the neutral position after PTO was selected as they had a relay that was actuated by the PTO switch, so the switch could return to neutral position,but PTO remained on.
This was in compliance to newer safety rules in the reverse interlock circuit.
So as stated, serial number break is important.
It prolly was when MTD took over but I have not researched it.
IIRR it was so the PTO stopped when reversing the tractor.
That way you could not run over yourself sitting on the seat, while backing up:biggrin2:

One of my favorite regulations it requiring a tarp/cover for gravel trucks.
it is like rocks jump right up into the air and out of the truck damaging a windshield.
NOOOOOOOOO, they sling out of tire tread and if you happen to be in the wrong place in time you get a rock in da window.
But the do gooders just had to make a regulation to stop the "carnage"
