2008 GT2554 running very hot

Hi All,

Last summer I picked up a 2008 GT 2554 with a Kohler command 23hp engine, at an estate sale. All it needed was a new battery and a carb cleaning. This year it seemed to be running very hot. Poking around I noted the yellow cap on the fuel pump was loose and would not seat. I could remove it without loosening it. I took off the fuel pump and noted the plastic where the cap would catch and seat when tightened was worn away. Might this be a problem that could cause the engine to turn so hot?

I don't think the oil fill cap coming loose would cause overheat, no. It may cause it to seem that way from hot crankcase air coming out -- may have some blowby if it's incredibly noticeable.

More likely a "mouse house", under the shrouds, from being stored over the winter.

If the oil fill cap has been loose maybe it has vented oil and is running on little oil thus generating heat
Check oil level
Then as Roland said clean the motor

Check the intake gaskets while you have the cooling tins off. Sometimes the gaskets will fail and it will suck air, causing it to run lean, then run hot.

Thanks for the info Guys. Pulled the air cleaner cover and there was a bit of what I would call mouse nest stuff, cleaned the cooling fins, oil was low, so I added some. No oil leaks that I could find. I'll pull the heat shroud to make sure the muffler had no holes. Fun fun fun.

Air compressor pushing 165PSI does the trick for the mouse nests. My 782 was packed when I got it. :bash:
