129 clutch issue
I have rebuilt and installed a new PTO clutch on my 129. When starting the engine WITHOUT PTO engaged, the attached tiller turns over, as if PTO is engaged. Is this an adjustment I missed, is the clutch stuck or could the belt be to short?

A new unit? Or did you rebuild a used unit? Did you follow the guidelines in the repair package for the adjustment using the proper tool for doing so? |
Getting somewhere
The clutch is one I rebuilt with new old stock parts I had been given. I used the adjustment tool supplied with clutch parts and have all new internal pieces. The only "old" part I had was the pulley itself.
After reinstall I can make it "free wheel" by hand but only rotates about 3/4 of way around before stopping. Should I polish up the back of clutch as it likely rusty? Also I have eaten up 2 clutch button as i try to run engine and test PTO lever. Any help would be appreciated. |
Sounds like one or both of the plates have a high spot on them and need to be indicated and trued up on a lathe.
The spec in the service manual states "approximately 1/32" (.03125) clearance for the button when in the on position, fully engaged, lever forward. Start there. Make sure the threads are good in the adjuster and rods and have the jam nut installed and tight once adjusted. I would suggest a jam nut on the left hand threaded rod as well to take up more of the slop inherent in this type of setup. Make sure the rods and holes in the levers themselves are not overly worn as well. |
129 clutch machining
it was mentioned that the clutch needs to be indicated and trued up on a lathe. Is this something that any machine shop can do? Do you have any further directions or is there a service manual that describes this procedure?

Any machine shop can do that.
