How to identify my Kohler??

Hello all.. I have a 782 with a Kohler 17 Series II that I am needing some info on.. I have the ID tag off the engine but the print in worn off on almost all of the model number and maybe some of the serial number. How can I figure out what engine I have? Thanks for any help with this!!

You should have a Kohler KT17S-24302

Thank you for the quick reply!! The only part of the model number I can read is the K and the S.. and my spec number is 24302, so it all makes sense now. Thanks again!!

R Bedell, I have another quick question... I have done a lot of searching on the internet for my engine, and I am finding a lot of info on the KT17 but nothing on a KT17S. Do you know what the "S" represents in my model number?

Why yes I do...........it stand for Electric Start.

ALL KT-17's, were electric start. LOL.

You are lucky, the earlier 782's were series I, and if not properly maintained they suffered an early demise.
But much is written about that as it is history, and it happened to all manufactures that used that engine for power.
It nearly broke Kohler due to warranty issues on the series I.
Deer swore not to ever use a Kohler engine again at the time.

The series II and magnums that followed, were good engines.
But being flathead engines, they were a bit more thirsty and could not meet later emission standards so the design was retired in favor of overhead valve design. :BlahBlah:
