Kohler k301a “Hostile throttle”

I have 2 Cub Cadet 129s and one I still use to cut grass and haul firewood. I ended up putting a k241 on it. And a while back i got my other 129 up and running, got the exhaust valve unstuck, now has great compression. Also adjusted the valves, new points and condenser. set ignition timing, new spark plug and used plug wire, used starter-generator, and bought an amazon carburetor for it since an OEM walbro carb is absurdly expensive. It took some tweaking, but i got it to run great at idle. If i went over a quarter throttle, though, it would start acting like a tasmanian devil, it surged and died when under a small load. So that’s where i’m scratching my head, I thought it was the carburetor so i took the carter carb off of the other 129 (k241 has the same carb as a k301 if i’m not mistaken) and put it on the other one, only to get the same result. It ran really lean at first but i got it adjusted the best i could, and it still would go waaay too high rpms at quarter throttle. I have a gut feeling it’s the governor, but I don’t know how to fix it if that’s the problem, any feedback?

YUP, you correct.

Go to our Technical Library Section ( see: Manual ) and down load the K Series Service Manual and check out the Governor adjustment procedure.

Hopefully it is just maladjusted... if it isn't, then your governor gear blew up, and to fix that you have to tear the whole engine down.
