1650 in MN
This cub is in town and am thinking about taking a look at it. Seems like a fair price.
1. Since this has been repainted, how can i confirm that this is a 1650 (assuming that the build plate is gone) 2. I want to make it a tiller machine...if it does not have the rear lift option, what would it cost to add it? 3. Are there any issues to look out for on a 1650? Thanks in advance! http://mankato.craigslist.org/tls/1906620166.html |
The main things to look for, are the engine mounts and drive line. If you can shake the engine with your hand, it's time to replace the ISO mounts. As the mounts wear, the engine will drop down, causing things to not be aligned properly. Hopefully, the owner has addressed these issues. Please let us know, what you find. :beerchug:

Sounds good...I left a message, but no call back yet. Might try to make this a project machine with one of my good friends and fellow cub owner. We shall see......

Looks better than mine right now which is in pieces on the man cave floor and the block is at the machine shop right now.

Well, I went to take a look at it today. It is a 1650 and the engine seems to run pretty well...however, the steering column needs to be rebuilt, the ISO mounts are shot, couldn't get a good enough look to see if any major damage has been caused by this yet, it has around 520 hours on it, has a rear lift, but the bar to connect to the hydraulics is missing. The rear wheels are fluid filled, but they are starting to rust out (who knows what is in there) The mower deck is swiss cheese and a couple of spindles sound like they are grinding. The snow blower is in ok shape other than the red paint and what looks like a home made lift attachment bar. When we had it running, the lift picked the blower up but just enough to clear the ground, but i am not sure how high it should lift.
The frame and fenders of the tractor has been painted with ih red implement paint and the top has been painted some shade of IH white (all fof the paint was applied over the decals by the way). The hydro lurches pretty bad and it has been sitting out side for quite some time. The rear cover has rtv for a gasket as well but who knows when that was done. The guy was very nice and I explained all of the items I found to him. I have not given him an offer but told him that i wasn't prepared to give 500 for it. It was his dad's tractor so I don't want him to feel insulted by a low bid. He said that this one was just too much work for him. I figure if i can get it for 300 or so, I wouldn't be too bad off if it turns into a basket case...at least I can get that much back out of it in parts. |
If you part it out let me know I have a 1650 "project" I am working on in Mankato and could use a few parts for spares or parts on my current project.

I will let you guys know if I part it out. Truly my intension is to make a tiller machine out of this thing and do a restoration job on it eventually. I hate to see a mostly complete machine parted out.
I haven't given the offer yet. I figure I will throw out 250 and go up to 300 if he wants to bargain. I have a feeling I know what is going thru the guy's head...."its my dad's old machine and he always took care of it....and i know these are kind of collectible....it must be worth at least what i am asking for it" He is selling a little piece of his past and it is hard to have someone pick it apart. I will understand if he doesn't want to sell but i will keep my hopes up. |
Did you end up buying it? I see the post has been deleted.
