K301 help
Hey guys, first post to the forums!
My cousins 122 has been having issues recently. Today after driving it around the yard he would try to rev the engine up and it would just run away wide open throttle. Haven't torn into it yet just discovered this problem the last couple days. :BangPC: |
You need to examine the governor and determine if it is functioning properly. It can be a simple fix (external problem) or it can be a PIA fix (internal problem).

Could it be as simple as a grungy throttle cable sticking?

Welcome to OCC..... :Welcome2:
I second the Governor issue. |
Definitely a governor issue, I can think of a couple reasons this would occur:
First, it could be that the governor is not adjusted properly. Adjustment directions can be found in this PDF Kohler service manual on page 53: https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...ead.php?t=4646 Second, it could be that the internal governor has exploded. This is somewhat common as the governors are made of plastic, and often do not age very well. In order to replace the governor, you have to completely tear apart the engine, as it's the last part you remove when disassembling the engine. Before condemning your governor gear, try adjusting the governor and see if that helps :bigthink: |

If you check the handy dandy service manual, you'll see that setting the governor is a very simple process. Ten minutes and you'll get 'er dun.

Thanks for the reply's guys, we haven't had time to look into the issue. I do know two days ago he was driving it and the piece that threads into the block and holds the governor arm in had completely backed itself out. We're going to probably tear the engine down and see what fell apart soon.
