782 Diesel swap trouble

Hi! I have a 1982 782 that I am putting a diesel in. The diesel is a Kubota z482 out of a Kubota t1600 lawn tractor. My problem is the radiator and air cleaner hose functioning properly when put the Kubota in my 782, the Kohler Magnum I have in the Cub right now spins the same way as the Kubota engine (counter clockwise). And that is a problem because the radiator and fan is at the back of the Kubota engine (close to the dash and controls) and I really dont want to have to relocate the fuel tank in the 782. Also the 782 has no air screen in the dash tower for the radiator fan to suck air out of. ANY HELP WOULD BE VERY APPRECIATED.

I've got a 782D and the radiator is up front to avoid the issues you're discovering. Might be required to re-route the coolant to a front mounted radiator and use electric fans .

I have figured out my own solution in the last couple hours, but thanks for the advice! I am going to install a smaller fuel tank from a Quietline and remove the firewall. That should give me plenty of room to install the engine and any other "accessories" I may install in the future.

Sounds good Luke Workman. I know that you are fairly new to the forum, so it may be helpful for others in the future if you posted pictures of it in a new thread in the "Customized Cub Cadets" section of the forum.

Ok, sorry about that... I will post some pics when I get into the project.

Cast Iron axle tubes vs Cast Aluminum axle tubes

Hello everybody! I was wondering while my tractor is apart if I should swap the aluminum axle tubes in my 782 to the cast iron ones that I have from a 1450 parts tractor. I can't seem to find any information on what grade alloy the axle tubes are made of, but they look to be the same diameter. I have also heard that in general cast iron is 2x as strong as aluminum, so since the axle tubes are the same size the cast iron should be much more superior. The reason I want to swap them is because I'm gonna be putting a Category 0 3 point hitch on my tractor. Thanks for answers!

Swap the whole rear.

Luke Workman 05-22-2021 07:45 PM

Well... that could work, but I want to only swap the tubes for a number of reasons. The 1450 has disc brakes, not an internal brake like the 782. Also I don't want to pay for red paint for the rear end, and if the rear didn't get painted I would have a very ugly little tractor LOL. I wasn't going to do a total rear end swap, I just wanted to know if I should swap just the tubes to cast iron.

I wouldn't swap the rear or tubes unless something is broken. You will never brake the aluminum rear using a cat 0 3 point unless your are doing something stupid with it or installing a backhoe. I would put a set of rear braces on it though.

You will have to do some pretty serious fabrication work with the motor mounts, motor cradle and fan mount assembly. You may want to check with the sponsors to see if they have any of those parts available but I bet if they do they not going to be cheap.

Good luck and feed us some pics too.

Alright, thanks I'm gonna stick with the aluminum ones then. I don't think there will be much fabrication work at all, because our neighbor is a machinist. We are gonna do the motor mounts first and the electric PTO mount last so I can drive the tractor before its "completed".
