147 Stumbling Problem Solved: Weak Coil

I never posted a Q about this, but have been chasing my tail for longer than I care to admit on this one. After a complete rebuild of the K321 it fired up with ease and seemed to run really well.

Fast forward to the project sitting for a long time and picking it up again. I've been having to use choke every single time to start it, no matter how warm it is. Furthermore, any increase in throttle and it would stumble and die.

Around in circles I went, moving from timing, to valve clearance, to cleaning the carb. Rinse-repeat. My error was the assumption that since the coil was firing, there was no need to investigate that.

I found a replacement for under $11 and thought, what the heck. BINGO, that was it. It simply was not getting strong enough spark. I was then able to set the Hi/Lo on the carb and she throttles up nicely. Set the timing with my Sun gun and it's running like a champ.

What has me baffled is this replacement coil. No mention at all that it was made in chyna. It just came in a box with a Long Island, NY address. I feel like I've stepped into a time machine.

HTH

Update:

The coil is from Intermotor of Poland.

Does it have the same resistance spec's as the Kohler coil ??

:bigthink:

Interesting,.. most coils are at least 3 times that much. You have a distributor?

TheSaturnV 04-11-2021 06:29 PM

3Ω resistance

My secret distributor is Amazon.

:beerchug:

Works great, the true test will be to see how long it lasts...

Oh, thanks. Just curious 'cause I just ordered one of these today for one of mine that was leaking oil;

I'll be curious to hear how yours stands the test of time...

Ignition Coils have a Primary and Secondary resistance. What is the Secondary ??

:bigthink:

TheSaturnV 04-11-2021 09:38 PM

Secondary is 8,440Ω

I've got my bowl of popcorn ready too.

If you can, post your primary/secondary resistance numbers for that DB coil.
