45 inch snowblower parts help
 

I tore up the brass drive gear for my snow blower this winter. I am using the CUb Cadet part number listed on the cub cadet site for my snow blower. The part number is 717-1425 or 917-1425. When you look up this number it comes up as a gear for a 33" snowblower. I have ordered two of these so far based on the Cub Cadet part number and the problem that I keep having is that I have a 1/4 keyway in my gear and the two that have come in so far have a 5/16 key-way. Either Cub Cadet has the wrong part number or maybe they changed the key-way over the years. I believe mine is the 451 blower not the 551 based on there being a gasket in the gear box. My sticker listing what actual model it is, is missing the numbers off the sticker. Regardless, the gear is listed as the same gear for both of them.

Good point, I'll have to take some when I get home. I guess I could post that I have an 1863 tractor it is on.

As far as which one you have, it doesn't matter for that part.
While the original number of that gear was 717-0300 for the
450 thrower, it was Superseded to 917-1425 so that's not the
issue as far as I can tell from the numbers and diagram from
Parts Tree. All 3 throwers use the 917-1425 gear.
So my guess and this is only a guess, you don't have any
of those 3 throwers, or Cub Cadet had a major Boo, Boo? :bigthink:
I have looked at quite a bit of these throwers last year,
and did purchase 2 different ones. I have a 450 and a 451.
Visually those 2 are the same, except for the gearing. The 450
is geared for the 4.5" PTO and the 451 is geared for the 6" PTO
The 551 is geared for the 6" PTO and the shute/auger opening
is 2 inches taller that the 450/451 (450/451 approx 18" tall and 551 approx 20" tall).
Also if it's a 551 the auger is not centered in the housing.
It sits at the lower/bottom of the housing, with a gap at the
top because it's taller. The 551 also has an end of the
shute angle lever on it. And all 551 throwers are
yellow from the factory. Is your I.D. tag missing?

As I see it you have 3 options:
#1: mill a 5/16" keyway in the shaft.
#2: mill a "step key" ----1/4" for the shaft, and 5/16" for the gear.

The step key would prolly be easier, unless your keyway in the shaft is "wallered out" as they say in the "holler"-- then mill to 5/16" in the shaft.
#3: you could purchase a "updated" 5/16 keyway shaft,if all other dimentions are the same.
