582 Special Good deal?
Hi everyone,
There's a 582 on craigs list that's near(40 miles). Needs a drive belt. 16 hp. twin Briggs. Price is $400. Looks beautiful in the photo. Is the 582 a good tractor? I'm working on a 149 and 127, but would like a red one. Can anyone fill me in a little on this model. Thanks Tim |
The 582 is a good tractor. The 582S has a POS Peerless trans like the JDs and quite a few others use. If you buy it, put an IH gear drive rear in it. I'm not really a fan of the Briggs engine (hard to work on, dumb carb and starter) but they can be made to run nice.

Is it this one? http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=5815
I wouldn't call the Peerless transmission a POS - it's true, it's not as stout as the IH 3-speeds are. But JD has used that particular series of Peerless transmissions from 1964 to 1987, and there are literally hundreds to thousands of those tractors still working today. Just take a look in the register on wfm for 110s, 112s, 200s, 208s, etc. Having said all that, I would probably pass on a 582 Special (as well as a 1100 and a 482 and CCs that used that setup) as I would want the 3 speed. I know there have been a few who have converted those by putting in the 3 speed as Matt says. |
I probably should have said 'POS compared to the IH 3-speed".
Something about all the parts being NLA makes it hard for me to like it. I was able to sell the one out of the 580 I converted to a 582 for a decent amount of money because someone else stripped a gear in theirs (seems like a fairly common problem). I've also seen one or two tractors with these rears break at a PD. |
Yeah, that's probably a more accurate statement.
New parts may be NLA, but there is a vast source of used parts for the transmission alone. I had a 1978 JD 210 that I got from a guy a few years back (I think in '07) that he posted on CL for free - it had a busted transmission (axle housing). I was able to get all the parts I needed for less than $50 and I sold the tractor for $400 and it's mowing grass in Illinois for a co-worker of mine. Just like anything, ebay, Craig's list, etc, is a great resource for parts for these. Having said all that, I'm not sure about parts for the IH side of the transmission, i.e. the 90 degree gear box, axle housings, etc. Matt would know a lot more about that than me, so I would have to believe him when he mentions a lack of parts. He's been a Cub guy longer than I have. |

Thanks to all who replied. The listing has been deleted by selle. think I would have passed anyway, after reading your posts. Two's enough for now(127&149). Must get the 149 going. Thanks again for the input
