K301 Engine Questions
2 Attachment(s)
Have a K301 with an E serial number which makes it a 1969. Would have come from a 124 or 125. It has the top mounted dipstick but it also has the stub shafts for balance gears. Don’t think I’ve seen that before. Spec number is 47138B.

Could it be an oil tube used for fill only with a dipstick located on the other side lower on the block? Do you have pictures on both sides that are lower on the block to see if there are blank-off plates that could be where another dipstick could have resided? Maybe someone changed the original dipstick location and installed a later generation dipstick in an older engine after the balance gears were removed? Just picking at straws not knowing what it will uncover!

I believe that they started to put the stub shafts in even if the spec didn’t call for them. I was told this came out of a 125. According to the serial number that sounds correct. Cub Cadet parts look up doesnt show balance gears for that year engine in Cubs. Since the block had to be drilled to locate the shafts maybe they just drilled all of them. It does not look like there was ever gears spinning on them. 1969 was the changeover year from the 125 to the 127. 125 had no gears. The 127 did. It would make sense to drill and stub all the blocks. Th is engine has the cam cover without the dip stick. That’s my theory anyway.

For What It's Worth, My 123 with a K301 does not have the balance gears, my 125 with a K301 does have them. It's been a long time since I rebuilt the 123 engine, but I do not remember seeing stub shafts in the 123 crankcase.
I don't have the spec numbers in front of me at the moment, but I could get them if it matters. Both engines are original to the tractors as far as I know. It was a PITA to get the index marks to line up when I rebuilt the 125 engine, but I did it. I found out later that I could have just let them out. |
I have A (1965) and C (1967) serial numbered motors out of 122’s. Neither have stubs.

Red Dave-Does the 125 engine have the top dipstick or the cam cover dipstick?
