12hp balance gears

just curious, did anybody ever come to the conclusion if a 77 12hp had balance gears or not. i have poured over the engine parts list and have not found any. thanks jeff

Hard to say...I've opened up a few engines from that time period, and some had them and some didn't.

The original engine that was in my 1250, didn't have balance gears.

Before I rebuilt my 14hp (12/1976) I wondered the same thing. The machine shop (which was a Kohler repair center) told me if the dipstick came into the top corner (pto side) that it would not have the gears. Simply because dipstick would interfere with the gears. This was true when I took mine apart to rebuild.

If the dipstick came through the starter side it would most likely have the gears but not always the case.

I doubt it has them...that configuration dipstick is right over where the gears would be. Most QL engines have the dipstick in the same basic location, but bolted to a hole in the side of the block.

thanks matt and mike, it makes me feel better, i have never done an engine with the BGs in it before and i heard it was a PITA to do!! thanks again!! jeff

Yep yours is coming in at the top of the block right where the BG's would be. I'm sure you don't have them

On an older series block the dipstick tube would have been over about an inch (behind the back of the starter) entering the block from the side.

The second picture of the inside, look to the bottom right you can see the dipstick and the landings where the BG's would have been.

very informative mike!!!!!! i will keep that info till the brain goes dead!!!!! i always tell everyone that i learn something new everyday and it's true.
i was a little hesitant about tearing into one period, much less one with BGs. my dad and i tore a 79 14hp down out of a powerking economy and it had balance gears. an older gent told us if we didn't have the right tool to line them up then we'd only be shooting ourselves in the foot. looks like we will have something to do this winter after the back hoe is done!!! thanks jeff
