Well an update on my new 1863. Looks like I might have been snookered by someone unfortunately. I got it all cleaned up and was doing a little mowing with it today and after about 10 or 15 minutes I noticed the fuel pump vent was putting out a little oil. Then it started really coming out and it was running and dying. Start it up, it would run for a second or two and then die. Choke it and could get it to run for a few seconds longer but would eventually die. Finally got it to stay running and put it in the shop. I did go out the next day and it started right up and ran good. Guessing a piston or head gasket issue.

Why would you think it's a piston or head gasket? If your fuel pump vent is leaking, i think the fuel pump may be going bad. Pull both plugs to get an idea of how each cylinder is running. Mike

BTDT, fuel pump failure for a 20 + year old tractor is a very common thing.

I bought one of these for an 1864 that I fixed up. It should take you about 10 minutes to replace it. :beerchug:

Well the reason I think it might be something besides the fuel pump is because something is pressurizing the crankcase which in turn is forcing oil up the hose that runs from the crankcase and its puking a copious amount out of the vent screen. The only thing I can think of that would pressurize the crankcase is either a blown head gasket or a hole or crack in a piston and or a broken ring. And I just swapped fuel pumps from my other 1863 that does not puke oil and it did the same thing. Am I missing something else?

OK then check the breather under the air filter and run a compression test. :bigthink:
