Picked up my first Cub Cadet
 

I bought this '77 1650 on Friday. I have some work to do but am hoping to be able to mow with it this week-end.

Those are nice machines. May need some TLC on engine mounts, drive line, change fluid and filter and a general tune up. Looks complete and not badly abused.

Congrats on the 1650. I watched your video and in the intro, I saw a Super Tomahawk chipper. I have that same chipper.

Congrats on your first Cub, I think you will really like it.

I was a little curious what I was watching when I saw the wrong colors come up, but then I saw that you got it right with the yellow & white!! Looks like a good cub and it runs!! Congratulations on your first cub cadet. Hope your mowing is goes smoothly. Of course, you are going to grease your fittings and check your shrouds for mice nest beforehand, since it has been sitting a while.

I had a '79 1250, very similar to yours. The only thing I didn't like about it was being a Hydro, it would run away on the downhills - freewheel - making it necessary to brake. This, of course, would move the Fwd-Rev lever and you would have to reset it. This was the only complaint I ever had with mine.

My second Cub, a 1440, holds downhills and doesn't have this trait. Of which I am very happy.

Good luck with your tractor, it will run for many, many years with the proper care.

Most of the "run away" can be corrected when the trunnion is repaired. I have a 1650 & 1450. that I have repaired the trunnion, replaced the springs and removed the play from the linkages and they do very well in holding their speed up and down hills. Very little to no lever adjusting while on hills.

Yeah I picked that up a while back, just used it the other day, works really well. I have a couple of videos on that too, check it out if you have time.


I put new points/condenser and a new plug in it tonight. Tomorrow it's getting the new ignition switch to correct the charging issue. I should have new valve cover gaskets on Friday to fix the oil leak. After that it should be ready to mow.

Have you actually traced the oil leak to the valve cover gaskets? :bigthink:
