Rachet Idler question
Hi y'all, newbie here again. I have a '75 1000 with the 44A deck. I've seen some conflicting sizes for the mule drive belt, one being a 1/2" x 81" belt and the other the 3/8" x 78" belt. I'm currently running the 3/8" belt however the rachet idler doesn't seem to be in the correct position. Is the idler arm supposed to sit firmly in one of the "v" notches, because mine doesn't stay in the notch. Also, I'm not sure how to tension the belt because of this. So, I'm hoping the group can come to the rescue! Thanks!

I believe the V notches are just an indicator as to when the belt needs to be adjusted.
Proper tension is when both idler pullies are in line with each other. As long as they are, I would think you are good to go as long as they are not near or rubbing the axle or the front of the mule drive. |
Technically, I believe that these decks use a 3/8" belt. That being said, I have always used 1/2" belts with no problems.
The model 44 deck ( larger center pulley) uses the larger 81" belt. The model 44A deck ( smaller or 'speed up' center pulley) uses the smaller 78" belt. In addition to what fins said, I try to make sure that the portions of the belts that go up to the PTO are as close to vertical and parallel to each other as possible. I actually use a 1/2" x 80" belt with my model 44 deck with great results. :beerchug: |
Mainemann77, maybe I'm not understanding your question correctly about "staying in the "v" notches" but read here, page 8, maybe will help you.....

The correct Mule Drive Belt for a Quietline w/ a 44A deck is: IH-59971-C1
