Starter-Gen dead spot ?

before I tear this apart, anyone had a dead spot on the S/G? mine wont respond when it stops on a certain place unless I turn it a little then hit the switch again. Hate to think it has a bad winding or whetever. Just throwin this out there to see if this is common or whatever...

A worn brush, or dirty commutator segment, or a bad winding on the armature can cause that. ----or all of those.
Time to take it apart and have a look see.

Well looks like the outer winding may be burnt up. Is that for the starter or generator or both? Are those available by themselves? (I'll also go look at the sponsors above and wherever else)...

How do i know if this is the correct kit for my particular Starter Generator?

CubbyRI 02-24-2019 09:01 PM

OK I communicated with a seller and can get the correct CCW kit.

Meanwhile, I had another S/G for another project (boat engine actually), and it looked good inside - not charred! Bolted it on, and here's the video. I have no idea if this engine has ACR based on the sound (I'm new at these) but it appears to spin well enough at least I think so.

So then I pulled the spark plug to use the starter to check the clutch. It is slipping but it works, so does the brake. Maybe before taking this all apart I'll try to run it. (has weak spark after cleaning the points)

Steering wheel has 9 inches of free play (!) before the steering rod moves. But for a brief test why not.

Thanks for the advice so far... :)

Are you sure you are getting compression? remove the spark plug and see if you feel resistance when you put your finger, (not your nose) over the over the hole.
If not maybe then you have a stuck exhaust valve most likely.

OK I checked with gauge... has 65psi compression on my tester. Not sure if the ACR working, or even if this engine has one (supposed to with the smaller battery tray)...

Compression seems to be low...but that could be from the ACR. Do you have the other important elements (ample fuel and properly timed spark) presented?

CubbyRI 02-24-2019 11:37 PM

The factory service manual says you cant reply on a compression gauge on an ACR engine, but I did it just to see.

Havent got to spark and fuel yet, except I did clean the old points and have a fairly weak spark. Ordered new points and condenser. As to fuel, the seller gave me a tank but the tractor has sat so I will probably clean out the carb bowl, jets, passages and the fuel tank (and sedement bowl/filter) itself etc before trying to run it. Oil looked pretty good.

If I can get it running, it will only be once then the whole tractor comes apart. Got a few paint questions I'll be asking as well.

But today was a good day getting as far as I did - engine cranks, has some spark, clutch kinda works, brake works... this thing is already 1% restored! ha!

That's a start! :beerchug:
