cc 109 k241 new owner - need some help please!

Hi everyone, I picked up a Cub Cadet 109 with mower and tiller. She ran pretty decent, but just died on me the other day. I scanned the archives and thanks to your good posts, I got it running again. I put in a new coil, and the condenser and points are waiting for me at NAPA.

Heres my questions and issues:
- runs decent driving around, but under load (really long grass) she is bogging down, and I need to stop the mower to get it rev up, then repeat. I have played with the carb settings and I am checking the gas flow and changing the filter today.
I am hoping the new points and proper gap will help this? Do I have the mover drive belt too tight? Thoughts?

- she blows smoke from the crankcase vent (I hope its the crankcase vent) near the carb - there was no breather hose, should there be?

- If everything is working properly, does the 109 have enough power to cut tall grass (I am talking 2 ft high hay effectively - maybe I need goats instead) or am I asking too much from it?

Thanks for your help - Great forum!

in regard to the bogging did you try to cut at the highest setting? might have to make a couple passes with grass that tall.

2 feet tall grass is probably asking a bit much for 10hp motor, but, you might also check your governor setting and set it to be a little more sensitive.

The timing has to be set right or it will have no power, and gapping the points to 0.020" probably isn't going to do it. Read this.

Thanks for the input everyone. I put in the new points, timed it, made sure the mower was in the highest position, and she worked great! I mowed about 1.5 acres last night, no more bogging and lots of power.

I note it isn't blowing smoke under load from the exhaust, but it does blow from the crankcase vent. Is this normal? Is there a way to route the vent back to the air cleaner?

Thanks again,
Mark

The smoke coming from the crankcase breather is blow by from the rings. They are probably worn a little bit. Not a big deal unless you are losing power really bad. My 125 smoked for a good ten years before I rebuilt the motor. Mine got to the point where it had about the power of a 7 horse and would overheat in no time.
