582 Questions

All,
There is a 582 for sale on Craigslist in my area and it comes with a mower deck and the side panels, he is wanting $300 for it. I have not seen it in person, it looks straight (will need paint) and he says the engine has a "little tic". He said the clutch for the mower deck "should work". Is there anything else I should look out for?

Thanks

If it has the stock engine, it’s a 16hp Briggs horizontal twin. They aren’t super common engines and some parts are NLA or can be expensive. It’s a fairly easy repower if necessary, though.

For the most part, the engine on 82 series tractors is the major thing to look out for aside from obvious overall condition stuff. That’s really the only thing that can get you too deep in trouble with them.

There are some differences in different 582 models. There are 3 basic different variants.

The 582 special, which is basically a 582 with a cheaper peerless 4 speed transaxle (still heavy duty, just not IH heavy duty), a cast iron rear end 582, which would be serial # under 720,000 and the aluminum rear 3 speed which is s/n over 720,000.

For $300 you can’t really go too far wrong at any rate.
