Original rearend bleeding to death.

Had to spend a few days away from my new project (clean-up/repair/maint. of a 62' O). encountered a problem.

On page 24 of the parts manual that I have for the CCO the item indicated as number 4 (Carrier, Rear Axle LH); mine has a 1/2" hole in the very bottom of that cake-pan shaped portion (in what would be the 6 o'clock position), just outboard of the flange that bolts to the transmission case. Is this hole supposed to be there? In removing the rear wheels I raised the rear of the tractor about 3/4" to be able to get the wheels off, removed the wheels, lowered the rear of the tractor back to original ride height (resting on jack stands), came back the next day and there was a pool of whatever oil like product was in the rear end. It seems to have come out this hole, there were still a few drips exiting when I came back the next day. The back plate on the rearend has NOT be removed. Is there supposed to be a plug for this hole? The parts diagram didn't indicate any, it didn't even mention the hole. Help!

I think I got lost somewhere in the words... Got any pictures?

Sorry YS; I know I can get a bit wordy at times. I managed to get a photo with my iPhone & flashlight (power is out, gotta love a laptop & wireless web!). I've not been so good about getting the crude cleaned off yet. The shot was taken from the underside looking upwards at the hole.

Wild Bill: Thank you for the valuable information. I didn't see any "seals" indicated in the parts manual for the axles. They're just leather strips? Are they wrapped around the axle?

So, does the hole in the picture look familiar to anyone? Or, am I dealing with some rogue tractor here?

Wild Bill: You ROCK like Bach!!!! I had been looking at an entirely different page in the IPL. You saved me a great headache and several Excedrin. If you've still got the CR part number I'd appreciate it so I can head to my local NAPA, which is a whole lot of diesel fuel closer than my nearest CC dealer.

Thank you again.

DISREGARD request for CR part number; just reread your post. Thanks!

when you say 30 weight in the rear end, do you mean 10w-30, or sae30 thanks:American Flag 1:

30W = 30 weight = SAE30. 10W30 is 10W30.
