149 trunnion repair

Looking to repair the trunnion on my cub 149. The tolerances where the spring goes do no look horrible. 1.22x.77. I know I am needing to add shims to the damper plate because there is a lot of play. I am concerned about the peg that comes out of the plate that goes into the other plate. Seems like it is really worn. Should it be completely round?

Yes it should be round. I have repaired a few by welding up the worn stub and grinding it back round.

Thank you. It only made sense for it to be round in my opinion. The other plate also has some play, can I add shims to it as well?

I tried using shims once. It took out a little slop. Ended up taking the plate to a machinist friend of mine and he bored out the hole and made a custom sintered bronze bushing for it. Much better results. Still holding up today and can replace the bushing when it wears out again.:beerchug:

There is a bushing in the damper plate that may have some wear and causing problems.
It's number 8 on this page :

I had that problem with my 149. It was next to impossible to find neutral. Replace the bushing and neutral is easy to find.

I agree with the others.

Or buy a new Plate.

Not cost effective for me. Didn't cost me a penny. He owed me a couple favors.
