Engine fan screen removal on 105.

The motor cooling fan screen has gotten loose. Any tips before I get into this? Not looking forward to removing the cooling fan nut.

That screen is mounted to the drive hub with 4 screws. Chances are that the screen has broken around the screen hole that allows for the screw to pass through, into the drive hub. Maybe adding a washer to the screw to secure a larger area of the screen. Maybe the screws just need tightened back up. I'm not sure the at the moment, how much meat is on the drive hub to consider a larger hole being tapped if the hole for the screen in the drive hub is stripped out.

You will have to remove the engine.
Then you have to remove the drive coupler, then the nut holding the drive cup on.
Or you can just remove the screen on the tractor with a pair of tin snippys and call it a day...

3 pin clutch driver on a 105?

yes the three pin driver on the brain, that gives you more room for the tin snippys heheheheh

It would be a good time to check out that drive flange too, prolly replace the hardened retaining pin as well. I know JeffinPa has the drive flanges. I don't think I'd want to run the 105 with out the flywheel screen, though.

105 engine fan screen

Thanks for the responses ! Snippy time. The screen is a mess, more snow tomorrow, thrower is mounted, new screen is ordered ( Hurley-$65 shipped), and I’m not interested in pulling the motor untill spring. The Cub’s primary duty is snow removal with a little hauling arount the property—no mowing. My biggest concern with no screen is mice getting into the motor shrouds, but I have found cayenne pepper powder is a splended treat for rodents, just have to re-treat after the tractor is run. Drive line parts are all new front to back, and thanks to Jeff and his advice to check the ENTIRE drive line a disater was avoided. Just hope this works out untill Spring.

The screen does not stop mice, they come in from the fin area.
If the equipment is used frequently, like mowing or snow duty, they don't have much of a chance building a reproduction home.
If you are paranoid of the little cuddly creatures, a pair of snap traps baited with peanut butter in close proximity, will keep things in check.
(Hint:
they crawl up the tires)
The rotating screen helps keep grass, leaves and other debris from packing the cooling areas.
Happy trapping.:biggrin2:

105 fan scren

I agree, but isn’t the fan also an easy way in when the screen is not there?

Also I expect to replace the head gasket this spring, and will pull the shrouds to do any necessary clean up of the fins.
