Newbie with questions about buying a 147
 

Hello all, I am considering buying a 1969 model 147. After checking around,this website seem like the place to ask questions. Alot of knowledge and great info here.. I dont know much about Cub Cadets so maybe I can get some pointers before I buy one. The owner went thru and rebuilt the carb,installed new points,resealed and re-filled the hydro etc.It runs/drives and mows good and has no rust. I comes with a mower deck, snow blade and wheel weights.Is $600 a fair price? .How reliable are the Kohler 14hp engines?and how reliable is the electric deck? My trusty 12yr old mower is showing its age and I want to get an "insurance policy". My parents neighbor has a Cub that he has had since before I was born - and was cutting his lawn with it yesterday. Seems they can last a long time,thats why I here to ask the people that would know,before i spend my money.Sorry to be long winded.I appreciate any and all replies (esp. specific to the 147 model), Thanks in advance. a FAIR price is what you consider to be fair. Around here that would be a great deal with the accessories. The only thing I am uncertain about, is I don't remember the 147's having an electric deck, I am assuming you mean PTO that turns on the deck blades? But I have learned of things in here I didn't know existed so I am waiting to see what others say. The Kohler motors are outstanding motors and are my preference compared to Briggs. You will have a mower that will outlast any new mower you could buy buy at least another 40 years, if you keep it maintained. These mowers are designed to be used and are built like tanks. I always keep coming back to Cub Cadets, be careful tho, they tend to grow on you and before you know it, you will look around your garage one day and find probably more than one hanging around waiting to be used :). It's only been a month and I already have two with plans for more. You will find manuals here, and diagrams and everything you would need to know to use and repair your Cub. Oh and Welcome aboard :)

I paid 600.00 for my 71. It has been well cared for over the years. Has 42" IH push blade. wheel weights, 4-link chains and of course the 38" mower deck. I dare not say you may have a good deal!

Frank, if you get the 147, you won't be sorry. They do last a long time, if taken care of properly. The 147 came standard with an electric lift. I bet, that is what the owner is talking about, when he says electric deck. $600 is a good deal, if everything is in great condition. :beerchug:

Cubdrummer I would go for it. 600 sounds like a fair price to me. As someone else stated it will outlast anything sold new today. Keep on top of the maintenance and it will last forever.:beerchug:

Good call Cecil, I had PTO on the brain all day when I was thinking of electric deck, never thought about the electric lift, of course I have never had one with that option, only the hydraulic on a 149. I would love to have one of the electric lifts.

Thanks everyone for the replies and information. I havent made the purchase yet, and am looking at 2 more this week. One is a 108, the other is a 680, and neither are over $400. They dont have plows or anything other than a mowing deck - but they are both ready to cut. I just need to get to them first..

I recently purchased a late 70's 1650 and could not be happier since we got the bugs worked out (long story). However, when I was at our local CC dealership I was talking with technician working on my tractor and he made the comment about my old 1650 will outlast any new MTD/CC, hands-down!

Also, like DX3 said these begin to grow on you and you may find several in your shed. I have had mine for a month and already I am planning on another purchase to add to my "toy-box." I found a Cub Cadet model 70 that has been in a barn for the last 25 years. Although all the tires are flat this old tractor is in better shape than my 1650. My wife asked me what I plan to do with the "70" and I told her I would drive it around the neighborhood to make my neighbors envious. Ha.
