Max deck height

Hi all, this is probably a dumb question but I’ll ask anyway. I searched the forum and read my manual too. My 123 with the 48” deck will only raise up comfortably to the 3rd highest setting. That seems pretty low to me and as my lawn bakes out in the summer sun and heat, I like to keep it longer. Now I need to clarify what I mean. I can raise and lower it through the entire range so I said comfortably. What I mean by that is, raised any higher than the third highest setting, the belt rubs on the front of the deck. Is this normal or is there an adjustment that I’m missing? I realize I’m being anal about the deck rubbing but I also don’t want to burn through belts. What do you all think?

Sometimes they do rub. There is some adjustment to it, but it is meant more for leveling. First thing to check is if the deck is hanging level. Other things I would look at is if you have the correct size (diameter) pulleys on the mule drive, and also the correct length of belt.

Another thing to keep in mind, is the whole idea that grass should be cut higher than your ankles is a new idea. When a 123 was built, grass was cut short and not many people gave a crap if it turned brown and died. Just meant less work for them. As an AG guy I understand canopy, and how weeds won't tend to grow in taller grass, but personally I don't think it makes much difference. I also think it looks ridiculous, and I hate walking in tall grass. That's why I mow it..... to make it short. 3 "clicks" down fom the top is probably still cutting the grass what, 3" tall? Surely undoubtedly that is high enough.
