install the battey the wrong way

hi everybody I mostly favored john deere tractors but heard allot about the cub cadets. recently I had the chance to purchase one model # 2160 I was impress with how well it was built ( heavy duty ) anyway it was running fine until I install a new battery the wrong way positive on the negative etc-etc and as soon as I turned the key smoke came out ..everything still works except for the deck I checked the P.T.O switch with a volt meter and it seams to be alright any help would be greatly appreciated..johnny

You installed the battery backwards... You didnt get any sparks when doing this? If you indeed got lucky and everything works except for pto consider yourself lucky. So if you have power at switch you need to check that it also puts out power. Then check to see that you get power down at the pto. If you do then the pto itself may have fried.

battery the wrong way

yeah I guess I am lucky .no I didn't get any sparks at all just notice the smoke . i'll be checking the P.T.O next like you said to see if its getting power ..someone said to check for a blown fuse can that also happen.?? and would you know where they are located at ?? johnny

The fuse would be the obvious place to start but typically fuses are placed on power leading to switch. If your switch had power then the fuse would be good. Don't hold me to this, I have not checked schematic.

Well the problem is obvious, you let the magic smoke out! :bash2:
First order of electrical work is not to let the magic smoke escape.
That is why you keep a empty quart bottle handy to catch the escaping smoke.:beerchug:
It is gone, you will never recover it so you are stuck with what is left in the other wires.
Now look @ the schematic and check for fuses.
Also look @ the schematic to see if there is a diode in the electric clutch circuit that could possibly be fried.
You also need to see if the charging system is functioning properly.
---And see if you reversed the polarity in the flux capacitor :biggrin2:
If you did that, your future of doing any electrical work is very grim.

put the battery on the wrong way
