Need help with 1250.

I bought a non running 1250. Pretty decent shape. Guy said he lost spark in it. The wiring was a bit of a mess. (Replaced coil and switch) Anyhow, I found a wiring diagram and think i have the wiring correct according to it. First question. On the PTO switch, the harness that fits on the 3 prongs on the right side was melted and couldn't be reused. According to the diagram one of the posts stays blank. Is this correct? Or is it jumpered together in that harness? I'm asking because i was able to get the tractor started with the one post unused. And it ran good for a few minutes. But the PTO wouldn't engage. I soon saw small metal looking shavings coming out from around the front PTO clutch area. Then after about another minute the engine shut down and now won't crank over. It's like the pto is stuck or something is locked up. I was able to loosen the adjustment bolts and could turn the pto belt pulley by hand. Not sure how these work. Never had one before. Is there something I'm missing? Could wiring be the issue? Or bad pto clutch? Looking for any suggestions. The tractor did run and move really well before it quit. Thanks guys. No idea where to start. Went from a high of getting it to run to a low of watching it quit on me all in a few minutes. Ha.

Pull the belt off the PTO. The PTO pulley should rotate freely. Actuate the PTO clutch (ignition on, engine NOT running) and the PTO pulley should turn over the engine, i.e., be engaged.

The PTO switch serves two purposes--one is an interlock so the engine won't start (turn over/crank) if the PTO switch is in the ON or engaged position. The second purpose, of course, is to actuate the PTO clutch. There should also be a fuse in the dash panel opposite the starting key that protects the circuit that actuates the PTO clutch. Check that.

Go to the technical documents section of the site and download the service manual. It tells how to adjust the PTO clutch. You'll need a feeler gauge set. You'll also find the wiring diagram for the switch.

The correct diagram for your tractor is here:

The procedure to adjust the clutch is here:

Sounds to me like either the PTO bearings are failing, or the brake was not adjusted correctly. When you adjust the air gap on the PTO you are adjusting the brake.
If the bearings are out, or going out, you can replace them. Here is a link to how to do that:

thanks for the info.

I may have the wiring to the pto switch wrong. The diagram i have showed the double prongs on the one side as c and d. On yours its a and b. Ill have to look at it again to be sure. Maybe that's my problem.

1250 wiring.

Is there more than one way to wire this tractor. The wiring diagram is different then the one you showed me. Confused which one is correct. And if my wiring job was the source of my troubles.?

I think as long as you have the PTO power on the side with two terminals and the safety interlock on the side with three terminals you should be good to go. Just wire it like the diagram without worrying about which terminal is A or B.

found the problem.

The coil in the pto was came apart and partially melted together. That's what froze the crank up. Looks like i need a new one. Am going to look into the wiring issue again. Could it be possible to wire it wrong to get it trying to go the wrong way? Just a thought. Don't know the history of this machine. Maybe it was giving the guy trouble and he didnt tell me. Chance you take with craigslist.

Short answer, no. Only one way to wire it.

No, that is not possible.

Follow the diagram I posted a link to.
Check out a company called xtreme that sells PTO''s on ebay. (Or call them direct.) They are the "unofficial" replacement manufacturer. Unless you want to pay MTD 2 times as much... or you want to take a chance on a used one.

question about xtreme pto

I looked up xtreme pto clutches on ebay. The price isn't bad, all things considering. Has anyone bought and used these? Do they work well? How do they mount up? The unit on the picture is much different than the original pto. Are there different mounting plates? If these work i will probably go this route. I'm not worried about keeping things "original", just want it to work. Thanks.
