Kohler flywheel question

1 Attachment(s)
I have this Kohler CV14 (vertical 17.5 hp) that came out of a MTD pos. It runs good and I plan on re-using it for another project. Before doing so, I like to strip a motor down to bare bones for cleaning and inspection.

When I pulled the flywheel off of this one I found that one of the alternator magnets had come unglued. So there were three in place and one loose.

It is not uncommon for these magnets to come undone and many times when they do, they break up or cause carnage to the alternator winding. In my case I was lucky and there was no harm done to anything. No signs of any broken magnets nor damage to anything.

I will JB Weld the loose magnet back in place but my question involves the fact that when in place there are four magnets with two empty spaces. Is this normal or did two other magnets also get loose and flung out somewhere along the line? I see nothing that would indicate there ever were two more but I have not seen flywheels with large gaps between the magnets.

I have searched for images and reads service manuals but they don't talk much about magnets. If anyone can enlighten me, much appreciated.

I have never seen one missing those magnets... Seems like it would be a choppy AC and not a clean sine wave being generated if it's missing magnets.

I think he needs a few more pocket screwdrivers! :biggrin2:

A little pricey for 2 magnets but I didn't price the flywheel.

The flywheel comes with 6 maggots on a kroller injin' :biggrin2:
It is imperative that they are evenly spaced and polarity is correct.
If those 2 things are not done correctly, it will not put out full charge.
an electric clutch, lighting and batt-tree:biggrin2: recharge, uses a lot of the 15 amp available amperage.
A 2 part epoxy works well after judicious cleaning of the maggots & flywheel surface.
Spacing can be accomplished during glueing with rubber tubing or dowel rod.
large vice grips lightly clamped can be used to secure during curing.
cracked magnets are un usable/junk.
Magnets can be removed from a like parts flywheel if undamaged.
Good luck!

My Onan has what appear to be roll pins between the maggots.

Just for kicks I looked on FleaBay and it looks like that flywheel only had 4 magnets. :bigthink:

My mistake for not looking first.:bash2:
I was thinking it was a mag 18 which I'm familiar with.

Yes, I located a couple on fleabay that have 4 magnets, but they are used flywheels and the ads give no indication as to whether four is normal or two are missing???

I guess you could call Kohler and ask them if it had 4 or 6 magnets. :bigthink:
