1650 Engine Swap
My friend just acquired a 1650 engineless. He has a solid running KT 17 Series 2 from a IH model 782. My friend is going to attempt to repower the 1650 with this Series 2. He will not modify the GT frame in any way if it does not fit. Anyhow, my question is: Has anyone ever repowered a Quiet Line 1650 with a Twin Series 2 engine? And would driveline alinement be the first matter of importance?
I'd like to see it done. I will make sure he don't modify the frame :biggrin2: |
That engine isn't going to fit without modifying the frame, it's to wide.

Why reinvent the wheel? The spread frame '82 series was designed to accommodate the twin cylinder engine design of that era.

Yea I was thinking the same thing, why try? My gut tells me that the cylinder heads are going to hit the frame even with the correct engine mounts and cradle. I thought if the swap could be done by a more experienced person with more tools, and retaining the side panels, that this would be a sweet repower in my opinion since any frame work would look good. That’s why my friend won’t chop the frame. I’m going to let him know about this. Thanks!

I have a complete, running 14hp from a 1450 for sale if your buddy needs an engine. Let me know through PM if he is interested.

They would of not designed/built a spread frame to accept the opposed engines if there was anyway to fit it in a wide frame.
Also the side panels will not fit. I have built a some unconventional stuff, but never trying to stuff #10 pounds of chit in a #5 box. Do yourself a favor and use a 14-16 HP single in a wide frame tractor. If you want a twin engine go to the 82 series tractors.:beerchug: If you want to hack it up, put in a small block chevy and be done with it.:biggrin2: |
I just spoke with him, and mentioned that having a Twin KT 17 in a Wide frame without modifying the frame is unheard of. Still, I encouraged him to just set the twin in, and see for himself. I don't care what custom work folks do to their own stuff, but for my friend, I'm selling him on getting the correct engine such as the K341AQS, or the K321AQS for his 1650, just as you mention ol'George . So we'll see.
Thanks for the suggestions, might ( might ) be able to sway him for the correct repower engine :biggrin2: |
