Cub 149 driveshaft

5 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone. I was using my 149 to plow some snow on a gravel path and the flexible rubber coupling was thrown from where the engine connects to the driveshaft. Now, can I get a replacement rubber , I have not seen any this style. Next, what caused it to be thrown? Well, the machine was running fine, I can still turn the driveshaft freely, however there is play where the u-joint is attached to the stub shaft on the transmission which probably caused a shock load and broke the rubber, I am assuming. I have looked on parts websites and breakdowns and see a different style driveshaft setup and was wondering if I should switch over to one of those styles with the rubber discs? Thanks for any responses. Joe Also, I have had the engine out for a piston and rings and looking at the first picture, the two halves of the coupling do not seem to be aligned. That probably had something to do with this...

Not a single part of that driveshaft is factory, that whole driveshaft is homemade. Your best bet would be to convert it back to the original style shaft. Member Jeff in PA makes driveshaft's and his prices can't be beat.

That is a sure flex/T.B. woods coupling and it normally has ring around the center to keep the 2 halves together, it would look like ring made of wire similar to a snap ring, it appears missing.
Also it has to be aligned properly, or it will come apart again.
As mentioned, it is not a factory instillation, it was installed by a previous owner.

Your choices are get a new spider and retaining ring from an industrial supply, align properly, and see if it will hold up,trouble free.
The other choice would be return to the factory setup, from various sources.
I would not of used a sure flex there, and they are expensive.
I use the factory set up in the front,(Rag joint/flex disc) but I do use a 3 jaw coupling in the rear.

I'm sure most here, would recommend returning to the factory set up.
Maintained/installed properly, they have proven to last in the vicinity of 40 years in normal usage.
I also do not like your rear universal setup.

Agree w/above
Entire drive shaft setup is "custom by cobble-craft" IMHO
Apparent mis-alignment of that front coupler, you can see it in the picture, probably led to it's failure over the years.
Looks like a couple hundred $ worth of parts to put back to original w/new parts. Unless you can find used stuff that will more than likely be just that, used.

Yeah, I'd go back to original.

As mentioned, contact Jeff for most all the parts. You will have to get rag disks from CCC.

Yeah I'd eliminate the wacko looking drive shaft too and go back to OD.

If you want to go back to the factory set up, I can make the drive hub, a driveshaft and the rear coupler.

You mentioned play at the pump ( rear ). What size is the hole in the shaft? It was 1/4" from the factory and used a spirol pin.

Is the current pin wearing the shaft hole obround?

Jeff

Thanks for the quick replies. There was a ring around the rubber, must have been thrown with the rubber. I will probably go back to original. Jeff, I have had that universal off at the transmission but I will get the pin out tommorow and take a look with a pic. I also found it peculiar there was no fan for the transmission. Thanks again everyone and more to come

I can make the rear coupler with a couple set screws to take out some slop. It's not a perfect fix ( but a good one ) and can save a worn pump shaft.
