450 Blower issues

1 Attachment(s)
I purchased a 450 snowblower for my 1811. Sorry that it's hard to read the Lot/model number & MFG date in the photo, it reads as follows: 190-450-100H298D. I removed all of the SGT mounting hardware, moved the brackets to the correct holes, and drilled the lifting straps so that everything mounted to my 1811. Took it for a test drive in the yard and it would only blow 5" of light snow about 6 feet at full throttle. The augers look like they're moving pretty slow as well. I knew it came off of a 1782. After contacting the PO, what I didn't know about the 1782 was that it has a larger 6" PTO. My 1811 has a 4.5" PTO (outside dia.). The pulley on the 450 snowblower is about 7 1/8 outside dia.

Not sure if I did this correctly or not... To get one full rotation of the blower fan, I have to turn the gear box pulley a little over 2.5 rotations. Sam Mac just posted in a different thread that the 450 gearbox is 1.86:1 and the 451 gear box is 2.58:1. Did Cub Cadet make a 450 with a different gear box for later model cubs? Is the 450 meant to attach to a 1782? Or did the PO swap the gear box with one from a 451? Is the pulley on the gear box of a 450 just over 7", or did the PO swap that out?

Is there anyway to fix this without spending a bunch of money for a new PTO that I'll have to swap out when I put the 44C mower deck back on? ...Guessing a smaller pulley on the snowblower???

Depends on the 1782's serial number.
This is for the 1782.

This is for the 1811.

But, I don't know chit either way about snowthrowers...
For some of your questions, seems the PO could answer a few of them for you. As long as you can talk to him, he'd know what he switched, or didn't.:bigthink:

I think you answered your own question. Pretty obvious that if you have a input to output ratio of 2.5:1 that it has a gearbox off of a 451.

Options are, sell that blower or trade it for a true 450, or change the PTO on the tractor. Switching pulleys isn't a good idea as you would have to go smaller. You will lose belt surface area and won't hold the load well. The 2 stage blowers take a lot of power to run.

The augers on the two stage throwers don't turn real fast, by the way.

Zippy1- Thanks for the info on cubs website for looking up attachments, I hadn't seen that yet. The 450 gear box assembly part numbers are the same for both the 1811 and 1782, pretty obvious. J-mech is correct the gear box must have been swapped somewhere along the way. The PO inherited the whole set up from his grandfather's estate, so I don't have much to go on for what was modified and what wasn't.

J-mech- Thank you for the insight on not going to a smaller pulley, that makes sense. I'll probably put this one on craigslist. Just confirming, the only difference between the 450 and 451 is the gear box ratio. I want to advertise this snowblower correctly.

Thanks!!

Yes, the only difference between the two models is the gearbox ratios. Otherwise they are identical implements. :beerchug:

It's not my ideal scenario, but I may have stumbled into the larger PTO locally that could fix my gear box issue. Does anyone know if a PTO off an 1864 (command) will fit my 1811 (magnum)? On the expanded view I got off cubs website, they're almost the exact same, the 1811 has a Drum,Brake (#4 ) and the 1864 does not.

1864:

Thanks!!

There is a number "1" stamped on the gearbox to differentiate the model 451 from the 450.

Gabe, Both PTO's will fit on either tractor. Both have one wire to the PTO, +12v. The ground is attached to the mounting plate. I had both on my 1541 with a M18. Those are the older style units. The newer style will fit as well, but it has a ground wire instead of grounding to the plate. I have this on my tractor now, Extreme Clutch.
I had the same issue with the 450/451 thrower. I got lucky and found someone who needed the 450 gears and traded my their 451 set. See this link. http://www.cubcadetcollectors.com/fo...php?f=8&t=6684

Frank, thank you for posting that article and your response. This has been a learning experience, with out question. So, just to confirm, this newer style PTO bolt to my Mag18?

Darkminion, do you know if you can see the 1 stamped into the gear box when it's mounted on the blower? Either way, after counting the pulley revolutions, I'm certain it's a 451 great box.

Thank you!
