1512 Runs, but won't go into gear...

What would cause a 1512 not to shift into gear (forward & reverse), nor activate the hydraulics after it was running just fine? Had this happen to me yesterday. The only thing I can think of is the PTO isn't engaging. Any trouble shooting tips?

Thank you,
Jon

The 1512 is a HYDRO.....not a Gear Drive

Now assuming you are talking about the Hydro not working allowing the tractor to move, here is what I would suggest:

(A) Pull the tunnel cover off

(B) With the engine running, place the hydro lever into forward.

(C) Observe the drive shaft.

(D) Is the "input shaft" to the hydro unit spinning at the same RPM's as the drive shaft..??

Examine and report back.

No idea what a 1512 is. However, never heard of a lawnmower where the propulsions system is tied in to the PTO (unless both are driven off the same pulley). I would assume either your pump is not turning due to a sheared drive pin/coupler or if it is belt drive then the belt is broke or off. Some lawnmowers have a dump valve that you can lock into position that allows the machine to be rolled. Does yours have one and is it in the "normal" position that allows the machine to be used? Other than that it begins to get more complicated--fluid levels, plugged filters, internal damage to the pump. My bet and hope (since its a 5 second "fix") is that its the dump valve.

Me neither and it is NOT on a Cub Cadet.

Your assumption is correct

There is NO belt in the drive line of the 1512

The 1512 rolled out of the Factory with "automatic" relief (dump) valves

AGAIN....pull the Tunnel Cover and make an observation.

Roland is correct. You sheared the pin on the input of the hydro pump. I sheared my "grade 5 bolt" off on my 882 a few weeks ago while driving it. I had to use a bolt instead of the correct spring pin 3 or 4 years ago cause the hole is wallered out. Go to the parts lookup and find the correct pin and order them from McMaster Carr.

Get the harder ones though. I just ordered a package of 50 of the regular ones. Shear strength was within acceptable specs, but when I got them, they are not as heavy as an OEM one. I'm going to order a pack of the harder ones.

Jon, can you post the link to what you are going to get? I probably need to reload too.

Well.... Todd, you know how McMasters website is. For some reason, you can't post a link to a specific part, just the main part list page.

Here is the spring pin page:

https://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-spring-pins/=1a4g65d

I ordered the steel coiled spring pin. Part# 91598A482.
I suggest ordering the Heavy Duty Coiled Spring Pin. Part# 95755A415.
Instead of 50 in a pack, you get 25, but the cost is still pretty manageable. :biggrin2: You get about 21 more pins for the same money as you can spend with MTD, lol.

Those extra hard pins install/remove with more difficulty!!
Especially if in a situation where they are difficult to access.
---Just a FYI.

Thank you for the reply's. I've taken the tunnel cover off and observed that the pin was sheared off. My quick fix was to put a grade 8 1.5" 7/16 bolt with locking washers to secure the drive shaft to the pump. After making the fix, the shaft was secured to the hydro pump. However, it still didn't engage forward or backwards and there was still no hydraulics to the machine. After researching the PTO on the machine, I am wondering if the issue lies in the Electric PTO clutch or with the pump itself? I am not certain. Any ideas?
