782 No start - frustrating

Cleaning out the garage and wanting to haul stuff to the shop. Fired up the 782, hooked on the trailer, and made a trip. Very useful and good for my back.

On the second trip it started running a little rough and I gave it a little choke to make it back. Shut it down normally.

Now it wont start. I assumed a fuel issue but could smell it and gave it a shot of ether and no start (not a big fan of ether but wanted to know if was getting fuel). My first guess was a vapor lock or something but the ether didnt fire off.

Checked spark. No spark (ok, now we are getting somewhere...)

Scuffed points a bit. Ohm meter confirms they are opening and closing. Checked condenser and not shorted out (ohms slowly rising with ohmeter attached).

Power to the positive side of the coil (13v). Power to the negative side. Pos to neg on the coil reads about 5.5 ohm. To the sparkplug connections reading 10kOhm.

Now I am checking spark with a screwdriver jammed in the wire connection and held close to ground (maybe not the greatest, just what I have always done and can usually see a big blue spark if within 1/4" of ground). Will pull a plug and observe, and that way can see if its wet with fuel at the same time.

But its not getting spark. :bigthink:

Odd that it happened when I shut it down normally.

I am doing something wrong.

I may check on those points some more.

In the meantime my garage isnt getting any cleaner. Three tractors and not a single one is running at the moment. Although prefer it acts up now than mid January...

Well, went and tried again and got it to start. Blew a bunch of fuel out when it first started up, made me think it may have been flooded.

No clue the spark issue, I think I must have dreamed it.

Made a couple trips with it running and was running fine. Turned it off and waited a minute and then tried to start it again and no dice.

Shut the fuel off. Wondering if the float is stuck. And other carburetor issues. Some other day will dig into it. And will check again for spark.

Feel free to ignore this entire post, it makes no sense.

Check your plug on the back of the ign. switch.
If you had no spark,--- then spark ok,
sounds like a connection problem or a coil going bad when hot.
It costs nothing to remove and clean the terminals, they are known for that problem.
Just be careful removing the plug on the switch, as sometimes they are rusty and the switch spades break off.

Wondering about this one.

Will check everything again from the beginning. It send me in circles. Next time I will try troubleshooting with beer, more patient that way. :beerchug:
