Will a 15.5 Kohler fit my 100?
 

I know a guy who has a 15.5 Kohler that needs rebuilt, and he says I can just have it. I was wanting to try rebuilding one anyway, plus if it ever comes to the point that I need a new engine, I'd like to add the horses (won't be soon, my ten runs like a champ). My question is, if I ever needed it to, would it bolt up where the ten was, or would I have to change a bunch of other stuff? Will the parts for the rebuild be easy enough to find? Is there anything wrong with the 15.5? I've never heard of that specific kohler, is there a reason for that?

Never heard of that size, and I doubt it'd fit. It's easy enough to find the correct engine if you need one, so I wouldn't bother trying to kludge something else in there.

Its probably a vertical shaft engine, meaning the crankshaft runs vertically versus whats in your 100 now which is a horizontal shaft. It probably came from an off brand lawn tractor...might be fun to tinker with, but I would find something more substantial to rebuild if its going to cost you some bucks. K series Kohlers are plentiful, and if you can find one that was previously in a cub it will save you a lot of time and aggravation.

Matt, I just want one to rebuild for fun, and thought it would be neat to put more horsepower into my 100 when the time comes. Will the k341 bolt right up, or would I have to change the rest of the drivetrain?

the frame on a 100 is too narrow for that motor. the biggest you could go without modifications is a 12 horse k301

Yikes!! I was thinking about getting a 14 hp Kohler to put into my 107 to make it a 147. Does that mean that my NF on the 107 will not be able to handle the 14hp? I thought that the only difference between the 107 and the 127 or 147 was the engine and the decals on the cowl----am I mistaken?

The 147 had "notches" cut in the frames and they were flared out around the flywheel shroud.

I thought someone here had pictures of one that they had for sale but I can't seem to find it now...


BTW Stitch, a 15.5 HP Kohler is a newer style engine... A half worn out 10 HP "K" series engine will probably still have twice the power of a brand new 15.5 HP Kohler. In these old Cubs, a good old fashioned "K" series Kohler engine is really hard to beat.

This actually works out perfect. There's a 12 horse for sale up here for $75, runs but needs work, comes with a carb and starter. I want it to rebuild anyway, then it'll collect dust until I need it.


Think those two extra horses actually make a difference?

Oh yes, those two extra horses do make a difference. You probably won't notice it much just driving around, but when you start blowing heavy snow or cutting grass that has gotten "too big" you WILL!
