What the h311 just happened to my PTO?!

Guys I swear this is the day of half finished projects. First, we were removing a rock bed and had to stop because the trailer wouldn't hold any more rock and we had nowhere readily available to dump the rock. I had to stop half way through greasing the deck because I ran out of grease. There's more but I digress...anywho, I was mowing the yard and the front of my 2284 began to smoke a bit. Didn't smell like belt but I didn't know what else it could be so I let it sit for a bit then tried again once it cooled down (figured maybe the belt twisted? I didn't know...). The deck started fine, went to go to WOT and boom, deck died and couldn't get it to restart. See the pics to see what "residue" was left behind after the apparent carnage. Be sure to click the small thumbnails for a larger picture of the residue. I'm guessing the windings shorted and shot there insulation everywhere but I'm not sure. This was a young PTO robbed from my less than 600 hours 1864 (who was only used for snow pushing in the winter) so I'm not sure what/why is going on. Any ideas what happened? Either way, I know I'm going to need a new PTO soooo Sam Mac, what PTO's have you been getting off eBay? Any ideas and suggestions would be appreciated guys! :beerchug:

I hear you. Things started going bad as soon as I got out of bed this morning. Been struggling with one event after another.

I agree. The "Xtreem" PTO's seem to be a quality built product with a reasonable price.

A couple more images posted from my phone once the machine cooled down enough for me to investigate further.

Wow Ryan I know that seems bad but you're lucky that at least it didn't catch fire. That thang got hot enough with that bad bearing to actually melt the internals of the bearing too. Looks like the Sam endorsed PTO is the way to go.

Bearing failure. It's a good idea to check them for worn bearings during annual service. :beerchug:
