1450 Hydro problem
 

So my 1450 started making a rattling noise at high speed sometime last year. Sounded like a possible transmission issue. Changed the Hytran fluid with no improvement. I've been taking it slow ever since.

Last week the hydro abruptly quit while mowing. No forward or reverse. Deck will not go up or down. The hydro shaft is spinning, but it seems like there's no pump pressure, like maybe the pin in the charge pump broke? I took the filter off to examine it. Everything looked clean. After I put the filter back on I found 2 small metal pieces in my catch pan that I assume must have been in the filter. Two pin or piston shaped pieces maybe about 1/2" Iong and 1/4" in diameter. They were not broken, but they were chewed up a little. I promptly lost them because that's just the kind of day it was.

Do I need to be looking to do a whole rebuild on the hydro? Or just get the charge pump cover off and check that next? Any guesses on what those pieces are? I'm having trouble finding them on the diagrams.

Did you check the roll pin (spirol pin) in the driveshaft coupler at the pump? That sounds like what you found in your pan. It is on the external of the pump. It may have broke and fell onto the filter. When you removed the filter, it fell off the filter, or even out of the debris on the hydro and into the pan. I doubt that what you had in the pan came out of the trans. The hydrostat itself can pass oil to the rear housing, but the drain hole between the two is small and large parts can't pass between. It is very very unlikely that your hydrostat failed. Not impossible.... but very unlikely.

Sounds like you need to pull and rebuild the driveshaft and related components. DO NOT use roll/spring pins in the driveline. You need spirol pins. Either order them from CCC, or buy them from any place you choose.... just use the right style. Spring pins/ roll pins will break in short order.

Thanks for the tip on the spirol pins. I didn't know that. The external spirol pin is intact. But there's another pin internal to the charge pump housing, right? By the georator? I should be able to get to that without splitting the tractor?

The two pieces in the oil filter were not roll pins. There were two. They came from inside somewhere, because they were clean. They came from the filter side, not the rear end. I suspect they were the source of the rattling noise.

Well, that I can think of there are no pins inside the rear end.
You also clearly don't understand how the oil flows through the system. The oil is sucked from the rear housing. It's very unlikely that a solid pin came from the charge pump and made it to the filter, but I've seen stranger things.
I severely doubt you broke the woodruff key in the charge pump. If that happened you likely broke the rotor also.

The best answer is driveline issue. Just because you see pins, does not mean they aren't broken. You have to verify that the shaft sticking out the back of the hydro is spinning when trying to move the machine.

Now that I've found some better pictures online, I'm pretty certain those pieces were piston cylinders, minus that brass top. Does that make sense?

That goes for me too, I didn't know there was a difference. I thought a roll pin was a roll pin, I guess I learned something new today. Are they harder and more brittle than a spirol pin is why they break?

Piston pieces are fairly large. No way a whole piston made it to the filter. They won't fit through the bend in the tube. Plus, they would have had to make it to the rear. Only way to the rear is through a 1/4", maybe 5/16" hole. Piston is too large for that.
