Bought a 1200 QL, Starter Issue!
Worked on the new old 1200 most of yesterday. It went pretty until final test drive. The starter have been making a noise(sometimes), kinda high pitch grinding squeal like the starter gear was not making good contact with the ring gear. So and removed starter to check and SURPRIZE, the nut had come off the end of the starter shaft. No nut, no washer, no spring, just the gear itself.
I think I need a new nut(fine thread?), washer, spring and another washer, in that order? Or whole new/used starter? Thanks! |
I'd just put new hardware on it and see what happens. Maybe take it apart and lube the bearings/bushing in it, clean it out a little.... maybe sand the commutator. No reason to replace it just yet I don't think.

you are absolutely right, putting it back together is the best approach. But where do I find the washers and spring? Is there anything else I am missing?

I am missing
#1 KH-45-089-03 Spring, Anti-Drift #2 KH-47-468-02 Washer, Armature Thrust #5 KH-237645 Spacer, Stop Gear And 1 qty. 1/4-20 nut, I think. Thanks |
Probably lying in the bottom of the fan shroud.
Where else could they go?? |
I guarantee your not missing item #2. It's inside the housing.
All looks like stuff that can be had at a hardware store. That spring is very light duty. It just shoves the gear back down after starting. Maybe better to get a kit? About halfway down the page. All the parts you need, $20. http://ihccw.com/starters.html |
Thanks! I bought washers and nut in stainless at the hardware store. The spring was the problem but I found one on Ebay for $4.50 shipped. Starter problem solved by Only Cubs Site.....again!!!
