To repair or not?
 

Hi guys,

I have an old 782 that I'm sick of seeking help on to get running. When I get it running (usually only takes an hour of help) it runs solid and feels powerful...but again, sick of asking in-laws for help with it. I have a cab, snow blade, dethatcher, some extra rear tires (look like tractor tires), and some other odds and ends. The last I had it running was a year ago, and I think there may be a timing issue. I had trouble with the points shorting out, and am not sure if that's conquered or not.

So, I'm going to sell the whole package, but I'm not sure if I should take it somewhere to get it running before listing it or not. The only drawback seems to be that I may not recoup the cost of the tune-up. I don't want to get lowballed, but I'm not also not trying to 'make' money on it...just want a fair sale.

Worth tuning up...or would a buyer want to do the work themselves?

To me, a running tractor is always a better selling ticket for the seller, but not as good for the buyer. I think almost everyone here would pay more for a runner than a non-runner. You, as the seller, have to hedge your bet on the matter. A lot of the time, the cheap ethanol fuel is the underlying culprit for messing up the carb and causing it to not run or not run properly, but there can certainly be other issues, as well. You could post some pictures of what you have in the "What's It Worth?" section of this forum so that we could see what you have and estimate some prices for you before you go to the added expense of fixing the ole' girl up. A lot of the fixing up expense also depends on how handy or competent you feel with tools in your hand to fix your own. There is a great section in the forum under "Resources" and then "Technical Library" that contains manuals and how-to's to help even the novice get up and running again, not to mention many years of expertise and advice in the members of this forum. Who knows, you may even to keep the 782 once it is up and purring again!

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I stay away from the ethanol blends for all my equipment/vehicles. And I agree that these forums are great; I've browsed them many times and found great info. I considered doing the points/coil overhaul, but figured if I'm potentially selling it, I shouldn't go modifying it.

I'll gather some pics and more information (in a couple days) and see what you guys think. Thanks again.

5 years ago I would not buy a Cub Cadet non running. I'd want a test drive first. Today, having learned a LOT more about them from this forum, if the price was right, running or not wouldn't be an issue.

I say fix it.If it was mine I would repower it with a Vanguard or Command.
We need photos. I think just about everyone here would keep a 782 and fix it, then use the hell out of it. Keep it!

While I'm not familiar with this Series, the guys here can help in a big way! If your in the market to sell your 782, then why not see what's going on with it? Then determine time and money to be invested, make a better price judgement from there that would fair for both parties.
